Howdy guys. Sorry it's been so long. Just a few things on my plate.

Love the new slogan/logo!

Hi John... Glad to see you. How's the knee?

Thanks for asking. It is feeling better, one week after surgery, then it did months and months after the first 2. This is the first time in over 3 years that I am optimistic about it actually healing.

There was about a 1x1 flap of cartilage that tore under my knee cap. They had to remove it and clean it up. What was left is a 1x1 square of bone sticking through. They had to then drill a bunch of small holes in the bone to "encourage" "scar cartilage" to grow.

They also fixed a small tear on the lateral meniscus.

Honestly, it feels great.

The vasectomy SUCKED!

Well if April ever gets tired of you, you can always find a woman that wants to have children and not tell her any different

April has already had 4 children and John has enough women in his life (4 daughters and a wife) if has energy for any more women, I'm going to start making him run calls on the weekends.

Dude. I live with 5 females. (Which I love dearly) I have a dog (that USED to be a male) I wake up at 6 am. I work all day. I go home and eat dinner. I play with kids and pit them in bed. i work on proposals. I go to bed at 12-2am. Rinse, Repeat.

The only way I want to step out, is to a hotel. To sleep. No, I really mean sleep for a long time.

I wouldn't mind running off with a guy to go hunting, fishing, golfing, shooting, cigars or poker.

All of the original founding members. Top 25-50? Should all order the mugs, numbered, in order of joining. That would be pretty cool.

I wanted you to sell them. Just like April said. I definitely would pay extra so you could pay for some of this stuff. I think most of us would.

If he won it then offer him $6500-$7000 in trade for it. Cost him nothing. You get a deal, he gets a deal.

How's it going fellas? Sorry it's been so long. It's been months since we have come up for air. Once we got the shop it has been nuts. Knee surgery, hiring guys, firing guys, hiring guys and 12-14 hour workdays. Can't complain though.

So, what did we miss?

Hi John, how's it going?

It is going great. We have been in our shop for almost a year now. It is already almost too small. We have 10 people and need to hire a couple more. Its all happening so fast now. We have been getting all the necessary things in place to grow. April has been awesome! As she planned and put the pieces into place, she planned for how a big company is set up, not just a small company. Now that we are getting bigger we have the things already in place, or soon will.

The fact that we still do not sleep is still a problem, but we are working toward fixing that.

The roads are getting icy, schools are closing, so it looks like we will have a delayed start in the morning. John just brought me a big glass of wine, we won't mention that it's in a plastic cup with a straw, classy, so if I start getting goofy, don't judge.

I'm hoping you get goofy!

All I can say about running a business is it is much harder than you think. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that without April out business would not be successful. I'm sure I would still be out running 2-3 calls a day. Invoices would be made and taxes paid but we could not thrive. I would be working from 6 am to 9 pm then come home to file paperwork, research parts and do proposals. Usually this would keep me up until 1-2 am. I know this because this is what has happened when April was not available sometimes early on when it was just me. Fast forward 8 years and we had 2 trucks on the road. April was still running the office and me and another master were out still working from dawn to well past dusk. April had to try and do everything from paperwork to accounting to advertising to parts ordering and so much more. A year later we now have a shop and there are 3 people in the office. With all 3 working 45+ hours a week they still can not get everything done that has to be done every week. I say all this because when you really want to have a successful company you have to a great team in place otherwise things will not get done. You will waste valuable time dealing with office work rather than billable time. Trust your team.

We know EXACTLY where you are! I will tell you that I was the hardest to sell on going to flat rate. I fought it so hard. April had been wanting to change to flat rate for along time after researching it for so long and I said no. Finally, after eeking by and seeing the same results that you are, I gave in. At that time we were tapped out at $95 an hour and I just could not see my customers swallowing an hourly rate above $100. Let alone $150, $200, $300 an hour which is where you have to be at to be successful. So we switched. Downloaded a free flat rate book and began. I can't tell you how freeing that one change was in our business. It put our customers at ease. They were no longer checking in every 15 minutes to see how much longer. They new that the price was the same whether it took 1 hour or 5. They weren't counting the number of times I had to go back and forth to the truck for tools or supplies or how many trips to the supply house and getting mad. It took a little getting used to presenting it and feeling confident in it but now I would never recommend anything else as a general rule. There are rare occasions that we charge by the hour but that's after we exhaust our flat rate cost for a specific job that only includes a set amount of time. Like a camera job on a commercial project. Our book says its XX amount of $ for the first 1.5 hours and then we go hourly after that at XX. It's rare that we have customers who are upset with our flat rate system. If you want we can send you some info on where to start. The most important thing to remember is to be confident in who you are as a plumber and as a company. If you don't charge enough you will not be in business long enough to give your customers the quality and support you desire.
