Wheel pin or roller pin(s) IMO.

I've heard from too many other plumbers who have had bad luck with Lennox cutters to recommend them any longer, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I bought a set of 1/2" through 1" close cutters nearly eight years ago that are still cutting perfectly.

If you get into the bigger cutters, they also can get the frames a little tweaked and will refuse to cut straight.

No matter what cutter, you still need to be careful and start out correctly with it.

I've noticed that if you are careless in the first revolution, such as improper tension on the knob, or pulling it sideways slightly, it will thread. But moving the same cutter an inch away, and redoing it, it is fine.

Naturally, this wouldn't apply to a new cutter out of the box that threads immediately, but more to one in good working order, with a proven track record and sharp cutter wheel.

When the rotation of the cutter is not perpendicular to the wall of the pipe. Usually because, as others have said the cutter wheel pin, rollers, or roller pins have uneven wear.

I have a lenox spring open cutter for 3/8"-1-1/2" that was given to me with several years of wear and a screw missing. Two years after I got it I still have no issues. Original blade too. I have replaced the pen style reamer blade in the back which slides out.

Aside from that cutter almost all lenox stuff I have used is crap.
